The spectacular Tongariro Alpine Crossing is numbered amongst the top 10 day treks in the world and attracts thousands of local and overseas visitors every year. It is also a popular outdoor destination for thousands of school students on class visits, particularly during the warmer months. While teachers will be aware of the dangers that extremely changable weather can bring to the safety of their students, the 2012 volcanic eruptions of Tongariro and the fact that a group of 50 school children were on the mountain at the time has highlighted the very real danger we face from volcanic activity when on the Alpine Crossing. In this unit we look at the causes of eruptions, types of eruptions, the dangers, and knowing what to during an eruption.

Students carry out investigations and learn about the health benefits of vegetables and conduct surveys to find the most popular vegetables. Students will also learn about the different types of soils and their characteristics, eg acid and/or alkaline soils. As well as learning how to test soils, students will plan and plant their own gardens. As an added extra, students will be introduced to the concept of the 'potager' garden as a different and attractive way of growing vegetables. Strong links to English, science and mathematics.

Burns from hot liquids such as tea, coffee, and soups result in over half the reported cases of severe burn hospital admissions among babies (1-2yrs) in New Zealand. A study also reported that burns from hot water cause three times the number of hospitalizations of children 0–14 years, compared to fire and flame. Teachers can use the following ideas to help their students identify and manage the risk around hot liquids, spread the safety message to other students, at school and to family and younger children at home. It is also important that students know the simple first aid measures to take in the event of a hot water burn injury.

The wonder of hearing and how to protect it is an important health and safety unit dealing with a growing problem of our times – listening to music at unsafe volume levels and the damage it does to our hearing. In this unit students carry out investigations into the nature of how we respond to sound.
